Edie M. Brown / Academic Therapist

Academic therapists are specifically trained to work with learners with disabilities. Like a sports coach, I will teach the learner how to maximize strengths and minimize challenges. Instruction begins at ground zero and rebuilds learning step-by-step, providing the necessary background knowledge for further instruction. It includes an adaptation of content and materials based on the learner’s specific needs.

Bio

In the education community, I am best known for my knowledge and expertise in developing multisensory instruction in literacy and mathematics for learners with disabilities. I have developed a variety of literacy and math instructional methodologies using the Internet and assistive technology. In collaboration with English Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) professionals, I developed curricular protocols to improve literacy skills for adolescents with disabilities who are also English Language Learners.

I am a graduate of University of Maryland University College where I received a BS in Accounting, MS in E-Commerce, and 2 graduate certificates in Distance Education. I later completed the Teachers 2000 Program at The George Washington University with a concentration in Transition Special Education. These experiences provided me with the theoretical background upon which I base my instructional practices.

I began my educational career at Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes® as a clinician, being introduced to one-on-one multisensory instruction. I was promoted to Consultant, later to Associate Clinic Director. While I enjoyed my experiences working with students and adults in literacy and mathematics, I longed to work with a more diverse learner pool. I taught for 5 years for Montgomery County Public Schools in a variety of capacities. I was an After School Activity Coordinator, encouraging and increasing the active participation of students with disabilities in after-school programs. I taught with the Preschool Education Program - Extended School Year (PEP-ESY), implementing interventions for children ages 3-6 with disabilities and developmental delays. Additionally, I taught mathematics, English, and reading.

I have held leadership positions in the International Reading Association (IRA) and The American Society for Training and Development (ASTD). I am also an active member of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME).

While I enjoyed my experiences as a teacher, I longed to make the difference with individual learners that I made working one-on-one. Today, in my practice, I work with children, adolescents, and young adults with disabilities. Over the years, I have had the privilege of getting to know my learner as an individual. Taking into account the individual strengths and challenges that my learner faces, I can develop a course of instruction to bring about the academic success they richly deserve.
