Bio
In the education community, I am best known for my knowledge and expertise in developing multisensory, technology-rich instruction in literacy and mathematics for learners with disabilities. I have developed a variety of literacy and math instructional methodologies using the Internet and assistive technology. I use these methodologies to work with teachers, providing strategies for "my kids." In collaboration with English Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) professionals, I developed curricular protocols to improve literacy skills for adolescents with disabilities who are also English Language Learners.
I am a graduate of University of Maryland University College where I received a BS in Accounting, MS in E-Commerce, and 2 graduate certificates in Distance Education and Technology. I later completed the Teachers 2000 Program at The George Washington University with a concentration in Transition Special Education. These experiences provided me with the theoretical background upon which I base my instructional practices.
I began my educational career at Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes® as a clinician, being introduced to one-on-one multisensory instruction. I was promoted to Consultant, later to Associate Clinic Director. A was a Star Trainer as well. While I enjoyed my experiences working with students and adults in literacy and mathematics, I longed to work with a more diverse learner pool. I taught for 12 years for Montgomery County Public Schools in a variety of capacities. I was an After School Activity Coordinator, encouraging and increasing the active participation of students with disabilities in after-school programs. I taught with the Preschool Education Program, implementing interventions for children ages 3-6 with disabilities and developmental delays. Additionally, I taught mathematics, English, and reading in general education, inclusion, and self-contained (Special Education) classrooms.
I am a member of the International Reading Association, previously serving as a Technology, Communication, and Literacy Committee Member. I served as the Technology Assisted Learning Special Interest Group Coordinator for the DC Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD). I have been an instructor at the DC Web Women Girls Rock on the Web and Take our Kids to the Web. I am also an active member of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME).
While I enjoyed my experiences as a teacher, I longed to make the difference with learners that I made working one-on-one. Today, in my practice, I work with teens and young adults with ADHD and learning disabilities. Over the years, I have had the privilege of getting to know each learner as a unique individual. Taking into account the individual strengths and challenges that my learners face, I can develop a course of instruction to bring about the academic success they richly deserve.
